Earthwatch Institute Participation at Tropic Ventures Rainforest Project
Since 2002 the scientific research effort at Tropic Ventures Sustainable Forestry and Rainforest Enrichment Project, Patillas Puerto Rico, has been sponsored by the Earthwatch Institute. To date volunteers from all over the world have visited the site for ten day expeditions. All volunteers learn how to identify Mahogany and Blue Mahoe trees, measure other hardwood and native trees, take basal readings, pentaprism readings, identify vines, map plots, plant trees, and catch and identify frogs! They have collected data from over 1,000 trees which will be used in future research publications and to help the Tropic Ventures team manage and plan future tree plantings, and thinnings. Night-time frog studies have also been carried out over the last three years with Patricia A. Burrowes and Rafael L. Joglar, University of Puerto Rico. Papers soon to be published: Study 1: Performance of Mahogany, (Swietenia macrophylla x S. mahagoni) and Blue mahoe (Hibiscus elatus) in line-planted plantations in the wet forest life zone of the mountains of south eastern Puerto Rico.A preliminary study for the purposes of sustainable hardwood production management. Study 2: The Impact of Hardwood Line-Planting on Tree and Amphibian Biodiversity in a Secondary Rainforest of Southeastern Puerto Rico.
