Ausubo (Manilkara bidentata) rare hardwood

Ausubo (Manilkara bidentata), is a large evergreen forest tree that was the most important timber tree of Puerto Rico in the past when it was widely available.

This is no longer the case.

It is the strongest and most attractive of commercial woods, used in the tropics for furniture, turnery, flooring, violin bows, and billiard cues, railway sleepers, bridging, and heavy construction.

The heartwood is light red when cut and turns to dark reddish brown when dry. The sapwood is whitish to pale brown. The wood is very hard, strong, fine textured, durable and heavy, with a specific gravity of 0.85.

Contributor's Note

At Tropic Ventures Sustainable Forestry Project in Puerto Rico, we harvested this Ausubo in November 2007.
We are gasping at it's beauty as Andrés Rúa turns amazing bowls and boxes from it, and understand now why it was such a coveted wood aside from its strength and durability.
